Advantages of Oral CommunicationThis is a featured page

Before discussing the advantages of Oral Communication, it is necessary to define the term. A really basic definition that serves this purpose was found on www.teachingteams.arizona.edu/docs/OralCommunication.pdf - its says that "oral communication is the
spoken interaction between two or more people"...however, it is"composed of multiple elements" which "result in the success or failure of the interaction" This definition embodies the goal that we are trying to achieve- to make our presentation successful and effective.

This is just a summary of comments that are posted. Feel free to help in summarizing and expanding the information :)

The advantages of oral channels of communication are that they:
• are fast - useful for obtaining very recent unpublished information
• are based on two-way communication and therefore promote an understanding of the real information need(s) and the communication of relevant information
• are flexible
• simplify and facilitate the transmission of information between people working in different subject areas (useful in interdisciplinary studies)
• are easy and pleasant to use

I totally agree with the 1st point being mentioned and I feel that it is the most important in the list. (I’m not saying that the rest is not important though)
Imagine a situation where there is a jam on a major expressway and you use that route to get to work everyday. Today, you have a very important meeting and you definitely cannot turn up late for work. Oral communication can then come in very handy in the form of a radio broadcast that tells you about the jam so you can avoid it. It is definitely impossible for you to go online (written communication) when you are driving to obtain the information.
Another case would be watching the news and reading the newspaper. Both of them carry important daily information to many people all around the world. However, many of the news come to us faster through the screening of news on the television. The newspaper will only be delivered to us the next morning, after it is edited and sent for printing and many of us may already have heard the news from other sources. Although the newspaper may have got the information in a more detailed version, the gist of the news would have been transmitted to the audience on the news telecast as well.
I believe oral communication can bring a message across faster than written communication and since we are living in a pace-conscious society, being informed efficiently is very important to all the people.

samuel.ong oral communication as a means to convey a message more effectively 1 Sep 2 2007, 1:32 AM EDT by kesh*

In today's context, a simple misunderstanding could escalate into something more serious very quickly. I believe the key reason is a lack of effective communication. Although there are numerous forms of communication these days such as email and MSN, nothing beats having a conversation with the other party face to face. A simple sorry could solve many problems and if one chooses to keep quiet, existing problems may worsen.

Political leaders often visit other countries in the name of diplomacy. At times, these leaders travel long distance as a form of diplomatic exchange and build up ties through oral communication. The power of speech cannot be neglected as it is a sincere form of conveying ideas across to the other party. Body language plays an important role as well, and coupled with oral communication, can give an idea of the speaker's thoughts and feelings.

Why are inspirational speakers so successful? It is simply because they are able to connect with the audience. I once asked an experienced toastmaster: What makes a great speaker? He mentioned quantitatively that a great speaker is one who has given over 1000 hours of speech workshop. But more importantly, he mentioned that oral communication builds up one's courage and is a good indication of someone's personality. Consider this scenario: If a capable person who does not have good oral communication skills, compared with a mediocre student who presents and carries himself well, which would be more appealing to the general public?

Henceforth, oral communication breaks down barriers between people. Instead, it creates networking opportunities.

nkhoo Oral communcation convays emotions (Part 1) 3 Sep 1 2007, 1:35 PM EDT by eeleesahh

I believe that when we talk about oral communication, we are not only talking about oral communication, but also visual communication. For example, someone mentioned about talking face to face with people. Being face to face means that there is a sense of closeness because they can see each other and can read the reaction of the other party as the conversation progresses.

I feel that we should focus solely on the advantages of oral communication without any visual contact since the topic is on oral communication and not oral with visual communication.

Examples of purely oral communicational is probably a telephone call.

So why is a phone call better than an sms / email / instant message chat?
For one, emotions can be conveyed through a telephone call easily as compared to the rest of the other forms of communication. Oral communication is not only about the words we hear, it is also about the pitch, the sound, the non-verbal but audio signals we register in our brain as the conversation progresses. We are able to tell if the person on the other line is happy, sad, angry, or a pure nut case. These emotions are express through sounds we produce (eg, pitch and tone of voice). They cannot be fully communicated through words. Even if it is possible, many more words will have to be used to express a simple emotion.

Oral communication can prevent misunderstandings. When was the last time you misunderstood a friend because he sent you an sms phrased in a certain way? Text messages we read cannot effective convey our emotions. If I phrase my message in a certain way, my friend may assume I am angry with him, but in actual fact, I wasn't. This brings us back to the topic of misunderstandings in week 1. Through oral communication, this misunderstanding can be reduced.
